Kolb recalled, Kelly DFA'd
From Rotoworld.com
Pirates purchased the contract of RHP Dan Kolb from Triple-A Indianapolis.
If Jonah Bayliss is the alternative, maybe the Pirates should go ahead and use Kolb to close while Matt Capps serves his suspension. Kolb had a 3.15 ERA in 18 appearances for Indianapolis. He's a poor bet to be more than an adequate middle reliever, but the Pirates don't have any right-handed relievers, other than Capps, pitching well at all.
Pirates designated infielder Don Kelly for assignment.
The Pirates read too much into Kelly's strong spring in keeping him in the first place, and he went just 4-for-26 over the first 10 weeks of the season. He goes now in part because the Pirates are confident Jose Castillo can handle backup shortstop duties. He had a terrific play going into the hole against the Yankees over the weekend.
No real loss in DFA'ing Kelly, as he was just a glove first infielder anyway. Kolb needs to stay far away from the closer role, as Bayliss has at least earned the job by being in the majors this season. I'm not big on Danny, but I'd love to see him turn into a solid 7th-8th inning option.
