While Brian Sanches has yet to factor into any decisions, the 27-year-old Texan has played an important role with the AFL's Surprise Scorpions.
Sanches has tossed six scoreless innings over three relief appearances, allowing six hits while striking out two and walking one. The Scorpions (6-2) have won every game in which the right-hander has appeared.
Sanches and four other Phillies prospects are playing for the first-place Scorpions. Here's how they fared in the first week of the 32-game season:
OF Michael Bourn: The speedy outfielder has put up solid numbers so far, batting .292 with two triples and four runs scored. Bourn's week was highlighted by a pair of four-RBI games -- on Oct. 4 against the Peoria Saguaros and on Monday against the Grand Canyon Rafters.
RHP Ryan Cameron: The 27-year-old reliever has dominated AFL hitters, striking out eight in just 5 1/3 innings. Cameron has allowed two runs on four hits during that span.
RHP Scott Mathieson: Mathieson leads the AFL in strikeouts, whiffing 13 over 7 2/3 innings. The 21-year-old Canadian was especially dominant on Monday against Grand Canyon, yielding one run over four innings while striking out seven without issuing a walk.
RHP Travis Minix: Minix has yet to allow a run in three relief appearances, and got the win in the Scorpions' 14-2 opening day rout of the Peoria Saguaros.
