Pineiro had some shoulder problems last season but did put together a good 2010. He will never be confused for a strikeout pitcher but he can induce groundballs when he's on. He could be a good backup plan if Worley has a sophomore slump.A source told ESPN's Jayson Stark that the Phillies and Joel Pineiro have agreed to a minor league contract.
It's hard to believe no one was willing to give Pineiro a guarantee of a couple of million. Perhaps a couple of teams did and the sinkerballer simply preferred to pitch for a sure World Series contender in Philadelphia. Pineiro will make for a great fallback in case Joe Blanton or another starter has a setback this spring.
