Contreras was the only Philly reliever to make the Giants look completely lost at the plate during the playoffs. That's about as much as I saw him pitch last season but if he was looking that nasty that late in the season, I don't see why the Phillies wouldn't want to bring him back.According to Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes, the Phillies are nearing a two-year extension with free agent righty Jose Contreras.
The contract, according to Rojas' sources, will be worth around $5 million and includes a third-year option with performance incentives. Signing a reliever to a multi-year deal is always a risky venture, but the 38-year-old Contreras posted a solid 3.34 ERA and 57/16 K/BB ratio in 56 2/3 innings this past year and most definitely still has the goods.
