It's a good thing Eric Chavez has such good hands, because he'll now need one to field and the other one to count how many Gold Gloves he has.
The A's third baseman on Tuesday was announced as the winner of the 2005 Gold Glove, giving him five such awards in a row.
Chavez finished the season with a .966 fielding percentage (15 errors in 4,038 total chances), which was the fifth-best mark in the AL. He ranked second among AL third basemen in total chances and double plays (28) and tied for third in assists (302).
The Gold Glove Award, sponsored by Rawlings Sporting Goods, is presented annually to 18 players, one from each position, in both the American and National Leagues. The winners are selected by big-league coaches and managers prior to the conclusion of the regular season.
Chavez is the eighth Athletic and the franchise's only third baseman to win a Gold Glove, and he's the fourth to win multiple Gold Gloves, joining outfielders Dwayne Murphy (six) and Joe Rudi (three), along with pitcher Mike Norris (two).
With this year's selection, Chavez also becomes the fourth AL third baseman to win five or more Gold Gloves, joining Brooks Robinson (16), Buddy Bell (six) and Robin Ventura (five).
