    Normally, the A's wily general manager, Billy Beane, would have been in contention for the role. But on Saturday, less than 24 hours before today's 1 p.m. deadline, Beane was packing up after the A's 9-5 win over the Tigers and heading out the door. He was done making deals, he said.
