I'm with Prov here. I really didn't want this deal to be made. Defense (and pitching) have always been what makes the A's the A's, and this deal just doesn't make sense. Like Prov said, he'd weaken our infield (should he play defense of course). Plus I don't think the local fans would want him back either. I would be surprised if he didn't receive the warm welcome that he's probably expecting come FanFest/Opening Day.

I mean here is a blind resume of players making 5 mil next season and you tell me who'd you rather have

    Player A: .246 12 HR 46 RBI
    Player B: .293 6 HR 33 RBI OPS .781
    Player C: .247 32 HR 96 RBI OPS .875
    Player D: 50.1 IP 6.44 ERA WHIP 1.57
    Player E: 94.2 IP 6.27 ERA WHIP 1.63

I'd keep going but I think my point is made.
Yes Giambi was better last year. But the question is will he keep it up or even come close this year without that short porch and being 38? I say no

Bonds, Ruth and Aaron all good years when they were 38. Not saying Giambi will or anything, but 38 doesn't mean a player will decline in production wise.

Question really was if he was a steal or not and he definitely is.

I don't think you can call anyone a steal until after the fact. We all thought Pavano or Andruw Jones weren't steals, but weren't that bad of contracts. Then after the fact we see otherwise.

As of now, yes he's a steal. But after the fact is all that matters, because then you see the production you got for those $5 mil

You can pretty much say that about anything then, I can easily say that you guys overpaid Texiera, Sabathia and Burnett.

This is absolutely a steal if it's true...you can argue your "we won't know till after the fact" semantics and bullshit but then what's the point of ever talking positively or negatively about contracts until they're over?
I did a lot of good things as a sim league GM.

Ah, give me something clever to say here.

Unlike you in the sim leagues, teams pay off of PAST perfromance and estimate if it will continue. Giambi on a 1-YR DEAL is a steal. Even if he hits .200 28 HR 78 RBI (I think he'll do way better than that), its still a good deal for OAK. Barton isn't ready to play full time and Giambi is the perfect guy to fit in there.

So what if you have a lot of lefties, 85% of starters are right handed. If you win 75% of those games you're doing just fine.

You can't always go off past performance and estimate it will continue. That's not always the case. if you do that you're going to get hosed

So what makes you so confident that Burnett, Sabathia and Tex will put up the similar numbers in 09? Like they have in the past.

Because Burnett, Sabathia, and Texieira are all in the prime of their careers!! Giambi is 38!!! There's a HUGE difference. You can rely on past performance when guys are in their prime rather then when guys are almost 40, doesn't that make sense to you??

    Re: A's Steal Giambi!

How is this a ****ing hard one to calculate? Giambi made $23 million dollars last year, now will make just over $5 million. 30 HRs, 90+ RBI cost far more than the price tag pinned on Giambi. Compare other players with Giambi's production and their price tags. Its not that ****ing hard to see it is a steal. Giambi's power and on base skills aren't going to magically disappear. And for the record, I thought the Pavano deal was a horrible one at the time. I didn;t have to ****ing wait and see to know that. It is way below market value!! Someone explain how its not a steal.

    Re: A's Steal Giambi!

I'm saying at this point, yes, it's a steal. But with an old fart like Giambi who hits for low average and high power, that power can go away in a hurry, and all you're left with is a skeleton of a guy with a good eye, which is useless. It can happen in a flash, ask Andruw Jones. So my point is you have to wait and see whether this one is REALLY a steal
