If the Giants had a good team they wouldn't have to over pay for past there prime FA. It's been a while since the giants had any good young players come up through the minors. They got very few tradeable pieces. You can get past there prime players but you have to be smart about it. Look what the A's got in Frank Thomas a couple years ago. They did it again this year. He was just starting to hit well when he got hurt. Plus Foulke has been pretty good in the bulpen this year. The A's only pay minimum salaries to thomas and Foulke. Seems like they need to take lessons from the A's on how to run a team. How well do you the A's would do with a 75 mill pay roll?

But what you are missing is that Magowan wanted these guys to win one for Barry and that didn't happen. That's the only reason Roberts and Aurilia were signed. They weren't smart about it which is my point entirely. They went after guys like Carlos Lee and Soriano but had to settle with another year of Bonds and the guys I mentioned. That set the Giants back which is why now the Giants have to overspend now. The Giants DO have young players coming through the minors. The Giants are doing what the A's do, building around good pitching. Giants have Cain, Lincecum, Sanchez with guys like Baumgardner and Alderson coming up through the system. Giants will be a lot better in years to come and are already playing over thier heads this year.

They funny thing is he thought aurillia and roberts could help them win. There had to be better options then that. Eric Brynes would have been a good fit for the Giants. He always played well in SF. He grew up a Giants fan. They should have gotten him. Or Jay Payton. He played well for the A's. They have a big disadvantage not being able to get a guy like Frank Thomas. That takes allot of older guys out who can hit but can't field out of the realm of possibilities. They must have drafted very poorly during the Bonds years. The A's stayed good for so long because they drafted well. But the Well of prospects died up for the A's. Thats why they had to rebuild. It was a shame the Giants couldn't keep Jeff Kent. They needed another hitter like him. With only one good hitter on the team all they have to do is pitch around him. For quite a few years the Giants position players sucked with the exception of Bonds.

The Giants did draft well during the Bonds years but Sabean always traded them off to try and win one for Barry. That is why things will be much better because they no longer have the urgency to win one now. The Giants did try and go after guy better than Aurilia and Roberts but everyone knew the Giants weren't going anywhere. Jay Payton is no better than anyone we have now. Jeff Kent didn't want to stay and neither did Dusty Baker. Giants had their shot in 2002 and blew it. They have paid for it ever since.
