Oakland Athletics first baseman Dan Johnson and designated hitter Jack Cust have been named the co-winners of the Bank of America Presents the American League Player of the Week for the period ending May 13th. Bank of America, the Official Bank of Major League Baseball, is the presenting sponsor of the American League and National League Player of the Week Awards, which reflect the company's long-standing tradition of recognizing achievements that inspire us all to seize opportunities to perform at our very best.
This marks the first weekly award in the careers of both Oakland teammates. Johnson hit .545 (12-22) with a 1.091 slugging percentage, a .630 on-base percentage, three doubles, three home runs, six RBI, 10 runs and 24 total bases. In a three-game series in Kansas City (May 8-10), the third-year Major Leaguer went 7-for-11 with three home runs, six RBI and scored five runs, including a 4-for-4 game with two home runs and four RBI on May 10th. Johnson is currently riding a 13-game hitting streak. Cust batted .348 (8-23) with a 1.043 slugging percentage, a double, five home runs, 13 RBI and 24 total bases. In the May 10th game at Kansas City, the New Jersey native went 2-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI. Then, in three games vs. the Indians, the designated hitter went 5-for-11 with three home runs and nine RBI. Cust hit a walk-off three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning yesterday against Cleveland. He has hit a home run in four straight games (May 10-13), totaling five homers over the span. Cust entered 2007 with five home runs in 70 career Major League games and 144 at-bats.
Other candidates considered were Angels outfielder Gary Matthews, Jr. (.348, 4 HR, 11 RBI); Rangers first baseman Mark Teixeira (.400, 5 2B, 1 HR, 6 RBI); and Indians pitcher Fausto Carmona (2-0, 1.93 ERA, 14.0 IP, 7 SO).
