I am proud to be a Yankee fan

The Yankees went to Virginia Tech yesterday to play a spring training game against the Hokies. It's not uncommon for big league teams to play college teams in ST, but this was much more. Last year George Steinbrenner donated $1 million to VT after the shooting and his son Hal said he wanted the Yankees to play a game against VT. The Yanks went yesterday and stopped at the memorial for the 32 victims before the game. During the game they signed everything for the fans and players. A-Rod sat in the VT dugout for much of the game signing autographs and talking to the players. He called it the most important game he's ever played. One VT student had her fiancee shot and killed in the shootings and he was a huge Jeter fan. She asked to take a picture with Jeter - he said "only if you smile." I have never been prouder to be a Yankee fan - say what you want about the Rays brawl and everything, but this was as classy a move as any team's done.

wow. so classy. these guys have so much ability to change people's lives forever, it's nice to see someone actually take advantage of that ability. this is a beautiful thing. GO YANKEES.

This should happen much more often. While I don't necessarily think every team should be looked down on for not doing something like this, I must admit this was a terrific thing for the Yankee organization to do.

Most teams do things like this all the time. This was a class act but every team does things like this. Its when individuals do things like this that make me proud to be a fan of this game. Teams have all the money in the world, most players do not. I know guys like Smoltz and Zito go over and beyond to help people out.

The Padres have military day, a lot of teams helped during Hurricane Katrina (Yankees included) and tons of other things that go way beyond the game. Its nothing against the Yankees as they did a classy thing but they aren't the only ones.

You seriously just look like you have an anti-yankees bias...we aren't belittling the efforts of other organazations, just celebrating our own.

Personally, I love every one of these stories. But it is nice, after being constantly told we root for class and pride, to actually be shown.

Personally, I feel that every team that holds ST in Florida should have played a game against the Hokies and done this stuff.
