BOSTON - The New York Yankees will get slugger Gary Sheffield back into their lineup for Tuesday night's game against the Boston Red Sox.
Sheffield had been sidelined for New York's last 16 games with a left hand contusion. He suffered the injury colliding with Toronto first baseman Shea Hillenbrand after beating out an infield single in an April 29 game.
The 37-year-old outfielder attempted to play with the injury after taking a few days off, but experienced continued soreness in the hand and was placed on the disabled list on May 6.
The Yankees managed just an 8-8 record without Sheffield.
A nine-time All-Star, Sheffield is batting .327 with four home runs and 18 RBIs in 24 games this season.
The Yankees are also without starting left fielder Hideki Matsui, who suffered a broken left wrist in a May 11 game against Boston and is expected to be sidelined for at least three months.
