Thread: Mets Daily Notes

Tom Glavine became baseball's first 11-game winner by limiting the Blue Jays to just one run in seven innings of work tonight.
He struck out four and walked one while yielding eight hits. That the outing was against a Blue Jays team that is tough against left-handers makes the interleague outing even more impressive. He'll have a tough time going for career win No. 287 at Fenway Park against the Red Sox next week.

Orlando Hernandez lasted just 1 2/3 innings and gave up six runs Saturday in a loss to the Jays.
Hernandez hit both Lyle Overbay and Aaron Hill in the second and was pulled after going up and in on Troy Glaus in the second. It was easily El Duque's worst outing since he was acquired by the Mets last month. He's now 2-3 with a 5.40 ERA in six starts for his new club. He's going to face the Yankees next time out

Duaner Sanchez (pinched nerve) will test his arm prior to Sunday's game.
If Sanchez doesn't feel any numbness in the arm he will be available on Sunday.

Paul Lo Duca (thumb) said he should be ready to play Tuesday in Boston.
Ramon Castro started in his place in Sunday's victory.

Royce Ring struck out two in a perfect inning of relief for Triple-A Norfolk on Tuesday.
The Mets haven't needed any relief help lately, but when they do, Ring should get the call. He has a 1.48 ERA in 24 1/3 innings for Norfolk

Tom Glavine took a no-decision against the Red Sox after being charged with two runs in five-plus innings of work tonight.
Glavine left with runners on first and second with nobody out in the sixth in a 2-1 game. Reliever Aaron Heilman allowed one of the inherited runners to score, thus depriving Glavine a win 287. He'll try to tie Bert Blyleven for 25th place on the all-time list against the Pirates next time out

Orlando Hernandez took a loss against his former team, the Yankees, after giving up two runs over seven innings of work on Friday.
Hernandez deserved better, especially after coming back out to the mound after a 63-minute rain delay in the fourth. The right-hander scattered seven hits while striking out three and walking one, but still fell to 4-8 on the season. He's a risky play most of the time, but he's worth using versus the Pirates next time out.

John Maine gave up three runs in 4 2/3 innings in his start against the Pirates on Monday night.
Maine struck out seven, but he also walked three, and he was at 107 pitches when he was removed in the fifth. The Mets could give him another start this weekend against the Marlins, but he's not worth using in NL-only leagues right now.

Cliff Floyd is starting Wednesday after leaving Tuesday's game with a mild concussion.
With David Wright getting the night off, Floyd is batting fifth rather than his usual sixth.

Pedro Martinez pushed back testing his sore hip until Thursday.
Martinez will throw a bullpen session which will determine if he is healthy enough to start on Saturday. If he can't go Mike Pelfrey, Darren Oliver, or Jose Lima could take his turn in the rotation.

Jose Lima was rocked for seven runs -- five earned -- in just three-plus innings of work against the Marlins on Friday.
Lima time hasn't been too fun for Mets fans this season as the right-hander will likely fall to 0-4 with a 9.87 ERA in four starts with the big club this season. The club would be better off starting whoever throws the hardest at the five-dollar radar gun outside the stadium on gameday than ever giving Lima another outing. He'll probably head back to the minors after the game

Cliff Floyd went 3-for-4 with a homer and five RBI in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Mets.
He went 1-for-3 in the first game. Floyd might have gotten one of the games off if not for Jose Reyes' injury yesterday, which forced Jose Valentin and Chris Woodward to start both games in the infield. The homer was his first in seven games since he came off the DL

Tom Glavine has decided to skip Tuesday's All-Star Game after starting Sunday against the Marlins. Chris Capuano was named as his replacement on the NL roster.
It could be considered an upgrade. With Glavine deciding to sit out, the NL roster will include no one who has ever been a part of a victory over the AL in an All-Star Game

Mike Pelfrey will remain in the Mets' rotation following the All-Star Break.
The Mets' rotation is initially expected to be Steve Trachsel followed by Tom Glavine, Orlando Hernandez, John Maine and Mike Pelfrey. Pelfrey has decent value in NL-only leagues while the Mets use him as a starter, but he is likely one or two bad outings from being sent to the minors.

David Wright homered and Carlos Beltran scored the NL's second run in Tuesday's 3-2 loss to the AL.
Until Trevor Hoffman blew the lead in the ninth, it appeared that Wright and Beltran could potentially follow in the footsteps of Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz, who homered in the 2004 All-Star Game to help the AL secure home-field advantage and then used that advantage in a World Series win. Instead, the AL prevailed once again. After Wright's homer in the second, Beltran singled in the third. He later stole third base and scored on a wild pitch. Also of note was that Beltran, who played the whole game, might have tweaked a leg muscle reaching on an error in the ninth. He stayed in, but he did appear to be in some discomfort after stretching to reach first base on the play.
