Mets to hire Sandy Alderson as GM

Sounds like the Mets will officially name Sandy Alderson their GM sometime soon, with Friday probably being the earliest announcement. Alderson has been rumored to be the number one pick for some time now. While I don't know much about him beyond a general history of what he's done in MLB, I think that he really is what the Mets need right now. First, he's the first GM that the Mets have gotten directly from outside the organization since Frank Cashen in the 1980's. Secondly, he's an older, authoritative figure who knows what he's doing, and will have the guts to say to Jeff Wilpon "**** off, I'm making my own decisions."

In Sandy I Trust.

It's exciting, and I wouldn't go as far as to say that the Mets will be winning any World Series' in the next few years, but I think that for the first time in at least a decade, our GM is a guy who has a plan. A real plan. And I'm excited, because I think Sandy will a) have the guts to stick to that plan despite what ownership says, and b) have the insight and staff to help him execute properly.

According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, Sandy Alderson is working on securing some of his top lieutenants to join him with the Mets, including former Dodgers general manager Paul DePodesta and former Blue Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi.
Now that would be something. According to Sherman, Alderson wants DePodesta to help strengthen the Mets' statistical department and Ricciardi to assist with player personnel. DePodesta is currently working with the Padres as an executive VP, but a few executives "briefed on the subject" said they think he will end up with the Mets. Ricciardi currently works an analyst for ESPN.

Damn!! Bringing in a dream team here! That would be one hell of a front office if this happens. I am still more interested in who they get to manage this team but wow!

That would be a hell of a front office team. Word seems to be that executives think DePodesta will join the Mets (link: Strong-willed manager for Mets not in Alderson’s view - NYPOST.com) Ricciardi would be a nice addition as well.

I like the way Alderson is looking to surround himself with good people, and I have to wonder if that will translate similarly to whoever he hires as manager. With Leo Mazzone saying he'd be interested in the NYY or NYM pitching coach jobs, I wonder if whoever is named manager will be asked to accept Mazzone as the pitching coach.

Wait, didn't J.P. Ricciardi kind of suck as GM of Toronto?

From what I gathered, he was a somewhat decent player evaluator, but he struggled when it came to the actual transactions. Here, the transactions would be Sandy's job, which would allow for collaborative thought. There's a shot it works.
