Jeez. Can he get lefties out? I mean, I guess we could always use an extra lefty specialist if he can even be that?

I wouldn't mind Fernando Nieve being Maines replacement, pitched a great game yesterday.

Absolutely, but I'm not sure if he can do it consistently. It'd certainly be nice though.

Rumors are flying that after his MRI today, Carlos Beltran will be the next Met to go to the DL with what was termed a few weeks back as a "bone bruise" in his knee.

Additionally, Ken Takahashi is being sent back to AAA.

Fernando Martinez and Pat Misch are rumored to be the players called up to take those two spots.

How much more can this team handle? Their 1B, SS, CF, #3 and #4 starters, their set up man, and at least 2 key backups are all on the DL. I have no idea how they can even fill a 25 man roster at this point.

And Beltran is on the DL now, I'm not sure how we are gonna keep up in the race for long with our minor leaguers starting for us on a daily basis.

It amazes me that the day I'm ready to give up on our offense, Santos goes 4 for 4, Castillo goes 3 for 3, Murphy has 2 hits and a HR.

Who knows, maybe the division sucks enough to keep us in the race despite the injuries?

Jon Heyman of SI.com says, here, that Carlos Beltran will get a second opinion on his knee from an outside doctor.
According to Heyman, citing a ‘friend,’ Beltran could be out ‘awhile.’

In a post to Twitter, Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post says Gary Sheffield is still having trouble with his knee, and could soon be headed to the DL.

Well, I know it's just one inning in a blowout, but Misch made it through a perfect inning last night in his Mets debut.

John Maine told reporters today that he is still feeling pain in his shoulder, and will not start tomorrow for Brooklyn.

Instead, he received a cortisone shot, and will be shut down for a few days, meaning he may not return until after the All-Star break.

Sounds like a pinched nerve, but what do I know? They'll shut him down for a week, and hopefully he can get back soon.

Re: NY Mets "Walking Wounded" Injury Update Thread

    Metsblog:
The Mets announced yesterday that Carlos Beltran is in Colorado getting a second opinion on his bruised knee.

Beltran is meeting with Dr. Steadman, who is best known for pioneering and performing microfracture surgery.

According to Ben Shpigel in the New York Times, “Microfracture surgery is commonly performed on the knees of professional athletes, usually basketball players, to regenerate damaged cartilage. If Steadman finds that cartilage has eroded in Beltran’s knee, it is possible he may recommend it.”
    Rotoworld:
According to the New York Post, Carlos Beltran's season, and possibly career, could be in jeopardy if he requires microfracture knee surgery.
The 32-year-old Beltran has already required arthroscopic surgery on both knees, and the microfracture procedure is still rather experimental. NBA players Jamal Mashburn and Terrell Brandon were forced into retirement not too long after having it done. We'll keep you updated with his diagnosis

    Phew.

Surfing The Mets - NY Daily News

Apparently the doctor only saw a bone bruise (first injury the mets have gotten right all year), and says Beltran should rest through the All Star Break, and could be back soon after.

    ...I hope.

Re: NY Mets "Walking Wounded" Injury Update Thread

According to SNY, Fernando Martinez will have his sore right knee examined today at New York’s Hospital for Special Surgery. Frankly, I have a feeling the Mets may end up sending martinez back to Triple-A, while promoting Angel Pagan, who is getting closer and closer to being ready for action. Jerry Manuel told reporters before yesterday’s game that Martinez is feeling better than he did on Friday or Saturday.

Meanwhile, Jose Reyes is still not running the bases, despite being able to hit, catch and throw in St. Lucie.

There is still no hard rehab schedule for Carlos Beltran, who, from what I can gather, is still feeling pain in his bruised knee.

John Maine has yet to throw from a mound, as he continues to rest his shoulder and nurse his way back from a pinched nerve.

Lastly, as far as I can tell, Billy Wagner may be back playing for the Mets this season before J.J. Putz or Carlos Delgado.
