And this too from the Star-Ledger:The Mets are working to acquire a setup man for new closer Francisco Rodriguez — and that setup man would be another closer from the American League West.
J.J. Putz could be headed to the Mets in a three-team trade with the Mariners and Indians, according to major-league sources.
Mets right-hander Aaron Heilman, outfielder Endy Chavez and first-base prospect Mike Carp would be in the deal, as would Indians outfielder Franklin Gutierrez.
It is not yet clear which players are headed where.
Wow, this came out of nowhere....The Star-Ledger has learned that the Mets and the Seattle Mariners are in serious discussions on a trade that would bring Seattle closer J.J. Putz to the Mets in exchange for reliever Aaron Heilman and minor-league first baseman Mike Carp. Putz would serve as the primary setup reliever for new closer Francisco Rodriguez and would fulfill the Mets' desire to have a setup man with experience as a closer.
Two people close to the talks confirmed them, requesting anonymity because the deal is not yet complete. One of those people said he believed it was a three-team deal involving the Cleveland Indians, which could mean more players would be involved from the Mets' end.
Clearly Omar Minaya is serious about retooling this bullpen. Let's see if they can get this done
