FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Pedro Martinez threw a baseball Wednesday for the first time since rotator cuff surgery in October, lightly tossing a ball for about 10 minutes from a distance of about 45 feet at the Mets' Minor League complex.

"He looked good," rehabilitation pitching coordinator Randy Niemann said. "It's just the beginning. It's the start of a long process, but he looked really good."

After the Mets-Sox game, Randolph, who had not yet received a report of whether or not Martinez had thrown, downplayed such an outing's significance.

"I'm not sure if he did [throw the ball] or not," Randolph said, immediately after the game. "I'm not sure, [but] if he did, it was just light tossing, nothing significant -- just getting the ball in his hand and throwing the ball."

The 35-year-old Martinez went 9-8 in 2006, with a 4.48 ERA. He had been doing the majority of his rehabilitation in the Dominican Republic during the past five months, making an occasional appearance at the Mets' Minor League complex in Port St. Lucie.

Martinez is not expected to rejoin the Mets' rotation until the second half of the season.
