I can't imagine anyone wanting to sign an expensive contract to a player's 40 year old season when they can get it to only 37, but since it's apparent you'd be ok with going to 40 years old I imagine you'd at the very least prefer signing a 4 year pact over letting him walk? That'd be my best guess using discretion in light of the sudden demands changes.
