MLB.com: Marlins beat the Nationals with Beckett's good pitching

MIAMI -- All spring, Marlins manager Jack McKeon talked about Josh Beckett being on a mission to prove he is an elite pitcher. The hard-throwing Texan certainly looked that way Sunday afternoon.

Beckett turned in an overpowering performance, striking out 11, and Juan Encarnacion belted his second grand slam of the season in the Marlins' 8-0 rout over the Nationals in front of 25,089 at Dolphins Stadium.

Beckett (2-0) allowed five hits in tossing his second career regular-season complete-game shutout. He first went the distance on Aug. 31, 2004, against the Mets at Shea Stadium.
