Pedro Martinez and the Florida Marlins are believed to be in the beginning stages of negotiating a contract and could meet next week, a source told ESPNdeportes.com Saturday night.

The Marlins have spoken with Martínez's agent.

Martinez, 37, has won three Cy Young awards and has a career record of 214-99, with a 2.91 ERA and 3,117 strikeouts in 17 seasons with Los Angeles, Montreal, Boston and the New York Mets.

Martinez struggled last season to a 5-6 record with a 5.61 ERA with the Mets, after battling injuries and dealing with the death of his father. In his first year with the Mets, Martinez won 15 games and struck out 208 batters in 217 innings. But he has been 17-15 in the last three seasons.

Martínez owns a house in Miami.
A good way to ruin a young bullpen if you ask me. Pedro could brings in some more fans but he just cannot go deep into games. The young Marlin pitchers could benefit learning from a guy like Pedro though. Him being comfortable down near his home could have its benefits too. I still think the Marlins should save their money but his name alone could pay for the deal itself.
