My 2010 summer TV list

Rate this Entry
I'm a huge fan of television; and as you all know, summer is always the best place to catch up on stuff you just haven't had time to watch during the year. Here are the shows I'm planning to watch during the 2010 summer season.

Mad Men - I've just finished the DVD of season 1 of Mad Men and have two seasons to go before the new season begins on July 25. That gives me just a little over two months to watch two dozen or so hour-long episodes and I think I can do it. The first season started off kind of slow as they established the characters, but it has gotten a lot more interesting.

Breaking Bad - This doesn't usually seem like my kind of show (meth, really?), but I'm going to try to watch all three seasons of this thing on DVD. My friend has been badgering me about it, saying that it's the greatest thing since sliced bread, plus all the reviews are excellent, so I will be giving it a shot. And I'll be able to take my time with it.

Wipeout - Very excited for the new season to start. Yes, it's usually pointless and mindless, but sometimes, the summer TV experience requires shows where you can just enjoy people smacking their faces while falling off a big ball or into a giant mud pit.

Shaq Vs. - Towards the end of the summer season, we have the return of Shaq Vs. The first season was great despite Shaq Daddy losing every single one of his battles. Now the question that needs to be asked: what new sports are left for Shaq to battle in? He has done baseball, beach volleyball, boxing, swimming and football. Will Shaq try his hand at fencing? Soccer? Golf against Tiger Woods? What does Shaq have up his sleeve?

100 Questions - NBC is trying out a new sitcom named 100 Questions on Thursday night. This one is about a woman who is at a dating service and each episode, she gets asked 1 of 100 questions on a form, and each question then leads to the plot for that episode with her recounting the events. Sounds kind of like How I Met Your Mother a bit, maybe in a slightly different format. Now I don't know if this show will be good or not, and I might dump it a few episodes in if it really stinks, but if it's a comedy I have to give it a chance. However, the early signs are not good. The show was supposed to start during the winter season, but NBC pushed it back to the summer season. Not a good sign. Also, not a good sign? NBC reduced the show's first season from 13 episodes to 6 episodes. Either NBC doesn't know what it's doing (already obvious) or the show really sucks (also possible).

Survivor The Amazon - A summer TV season is not complete for me without rewatching a Survivor season, so I've decided to choose to rewatch the sixth season: The Amazon. One of the best seasons of the show, in my opinion, as it has the great division of the sexes, plus the cunning strategic game play by Rob C. I haven't rewatched this season since it originally aired, but I'm anxious to get to it.

Now if you're wondering if I'll be watching this summer's America's Got Talent or Big Brother, I don't know yet. I'm a big reality TV guy obviously, but I got turned off by America's Got Talent last season when it essentially turned into a poor man's version of American Idol. Seriously like 80% of the talent acts on last season were singers. I don't watch to see singers. I want to see people with legit talents. As for Big Brother, I'll probably be watching on and off, but definitely not religiously. It's just too demanding to keep up with a show that airs like 3 or 4 nights a week. Especially during baseball season.

Any suggestions are welcome as far as shows that I should watch.

I am not too caught up on what will or won't be back (or new) for the summer. But let me say that you are making an excellent choice in watching both Mad Men and Breaking Bad. Mad Men, can't get any better in terms of a typical drama. But Breaking Bad is everything your friend says it is, it seriously might be my most favorite show ever seen. Bryan Cranston has a performance that is really too good for TV and it is amazing how versatile of an actor he is as in this show you will see his life change, several times (and then compare that to his character on Malcom In The Middle, which he was great on.)

If you are looking for something a little bit lighter though, I would recommend checking out The Ricky Gervais Show on HBO. It is essentially clips of his podcast animated and while all are not gold, there are a lot of gems there. Its definitely the kind of show you might want to see in between intense dramas like those above.

I always enjoy NBC's Last Comic Standing. For some reason.

Finished season 2 of Mad Men earlier tonight. Getting really good. A lot of people seem to hate Pete Campbell, but I love him. Great character. On to season 3.

Which season did you like better, season 1 or 2?

Season 2 more because the storylines really developed and got better. Between the arrival of Duck Phillips to stir things up at the agency; Peggy starting to assert herself at the office despite dealing with the aftermath of her pregnancy; Betty losing her shit and kicking Don out, who himself is still trying to deal with an identity crisis; Pete and his wife and what they would do about the whole adoption thing, only to have him find out that he fathered Peggy's kid which was a great moment, by the way; the super-creepy relationship between Glen and Betty, which is fascinating to me. Also Jane get shut down by Joan, only to have Roger shut down Joan to go with Jane. So great.

Wow wtf. They changed the kid actor who plays Bobby in season 3. Did they think we'd not notice? Ugh.

Also, I guess I'll be checking out RUBICON, the latest AMC series about to begin this summer.

    Rubicon looks pretty cool too.

BTW, last week's Breaking Bad was a total game changer.

Just watched the Mad Men episode where Peggy first sleeps with Duck Philips. WTF. Totally out of the blue there. Caught me off guard.

The scene where the British guy gets his foot sliced off because of the tractor and blood flies everywhere like in Kill Bill was simply awesome.

    Betty finding the box. OMG

    Three episodes left...

I can't decide if Don is a giant douchebag or Captain Awesome. I vacillate between the two so often. He's probably both. I also can't decide if I feel bad for Betty or if I hate her. Probably a little of both as well. This show is solid.

I really hate Don's affair with Miss Farrell. She's a poor fuggo hag and Don can do so much better. He's slipping.

Finally a scene where Betty kicks some ass. I can't believe that Miss Farrell wait in the car the entire night while this scene in the bedroom went on. And what a scene it was, with Don spilling the beans about his past life. Emmy-worthy for Jon Hamm. Two episodes to go.

Finished the 3 seasons of Mad Men. Took me 2 months, on and off, not bad. I'm glad that I watched it because, although slow at times, it has turned out to be a great show. I'm still giddy at the season 3 finale. The whole move made it feel like the new Michael Scott Paper Company experiment in the fifth season of the Office.

New sitcom "Louie" premiered on FX last night. Excellent. I laughed.

Also, loving Breaking Bad so far. Still only on season 1, but it's great.

Halfway through season 2 of Breaking Bad; just finished the episode where Jesse goes to get his money at Spooge and Skank's dirty house with the underfed kid. Amazing show. I love it.
  18. missionhockey21's Avatar
Some of those scenes later on is some of the most tense television I have seen.

Funniest shit I've seen in a while. Tortuga's head on a turtle.

Jane = hot or not? I'm leaning towards hot.

Now to finish season 2. Four more episodes. Wonder if I can get this done tonight.
