Royals signed Lorenzo Cain to two years $17.5 million deal.

These opt outs are getting out of control.

It basically makes that contract either be effectively 2 years long or a four year albatross if he falls off the next two years.

They are trying to be smart with their money, and gamble at the same time.

It just seems to me that it creates one of two scenarios

- Justin Upton is as good as he's been over the next two years, so he opts out in a move to get even more money in the 2017/2018 offseason

or

- Justin Upton gets hurt or falls off for some reason over the next two years and isn't the same and now the Tigers are stuck with his contract because of course he's not going to opt out.

It seems like it favors the player and gives absolutely no advantage to the team.
