I guess they had enough 'proof' that he continually used steroids or other banned PEDs and actively conspired to falsify records/witnesses or otherwise cheat the system that the arbitrator saw fit to uphold most of MLB's suspension.

Seriously, though. I thought they implemented a 50-100-life policy not too long ago. That seems pretty straight forward to me so what's up with this 212 reduced to 162 games stuff?

I haven't decided whether I agree with the MLB decision or not, but the rationale is simple. 50/100/Life is for use of PEDs. A-Rod's suspension was for use of PEDs AND lying about that use AND trying to purchase evidence to hide the fact that he used -- plus the belief of MLB that this isn't a first time thing. There's more to the suspension than JUST the accusation of PEDs, and that's where the extra games come from.

It kind of defeats the purpose if they're going to tack on a bunch of other stuff he did that's directly related to the PED use and treat them like separate crimes worthy of their own punishments.

I'm no A-Rod fan but it just seems to me that if you're going to agree to a policy you should adhere to it, otherwise you're rendering it useless.

And punishing him extra because of the belief that it isn't a first time thing is definitely stupid. That undermines the whole due process thing that everyone is entitled to.

They don't tack on extra years in prison to murderers if they believe they may have gotten away with other murders as well. You only punish someone for the crimes you can prove. That's how it works....or how it's supposed to work.
