surprised sox didn't offer one to Salty... think he had value either on the tender in the trade market or by getting the first round pick... if your going to offer 3 whats the harm in the 4th

It would have been a huge jump in salary for Salty. He made $4.5MM last season.

This. No reason for the Sox to put themselves on the hook for $14.1 million.

So what... we got a ton of payroll coming off... he's going to get 10-12 mil per year in FA... having him take the tender at 14.1 mil wouldn't have been a big deal considering what the market for him will be...

Sure. But if you have so much money available, why not just go to like $17M per year and go after Brian McCann who would be a significant upgrade?

why not tender Salty, let him decline it, get McCann and get the pick for Salty? There was a near 0% risk of him actually taking the tender

Why do you assume there's zero risk of him taking the offer?

From Andy Martino (NY Daily News MLB writer). For what it's worth:

@MartinoNYDN: Hearing Boston and Texas (perhaps especially Texas) early serious suitors on McCann. So #Yankees have big $ competition.

Because he'll get 3 yrs x 12 mil per in FA if not and he takes it that's a tradable asset

There of always risk in any option, if there wasn't they'd give him the offer.

Risk of what? Him taking it? then you move him for an asset...if teams will pay 3 x 12, they'll pay 1 x 14 for him and give up an asset to improve the future

    Re: Qualifying Offers

I see what you're saying, CJ, I just think that at the end of the day they're gonna go hard after McCann, and if that doesn't work out, they'll find a cheaper option. They're currently on the hook for $125 million pre-Ellsbury, Drew and Napoli ($30-35 million easy). If they're gonna bump payroll up from this past year, they wanna do it for a difference maker.

At least that'd be my analysis.

You assume they would get market value in a trade
