Ron Santo passes away.

CHICAGO -- Ron Santo, one of the greatest players in Chicago Cubs history and a longtime WGN radio announcer whose devotion to the perennial losers was made obvious night after night by his excited shouts or dejected laments, has died. He was 70.

Really sucks Santo will not live to see him inducted in the HOF. This man dedicated his life to the game and will be in Cooperstown for his work on the field and from the booth. Say hello to Harry, Ron!

This is absolutely devastating news. I used to do a segment on The Bonnfire called Sounds of the Week, where I put a string of play by play calls from the week together over a music bed. There was almost always a Ron Santo explosion on every segment, and it was one of the better clips. He was an entertaining voice to listen to in the booth, and although I never got to see him play, I would have loved to. As LTR said, say hi to Harry for us. I can't wait until he's inducted into the HOF

Ron Santo played his entire career with diabetes, a fact that most didn't know. He kept it a secret from nearly everyone. He was one of the most entertaining players I had the pleasure of watching. I will miss his broadcasts as well. He was passionate about the Cubs, and was very generous with his praise for good plays. He would call the team out for "bone-head" plays also.
Rest in peace Ron. You were a truly great one.

Didn't see this coming. Ron Santo was a great man, who loved the game and the Cubs. He will be missed.

I recall from Rick Reilly's column that Ron Santo looked in a library book after he diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 18 and learned that the average life expectancy was 25 years. So, he lived a good life, all things considered.
