Lou Piniella's time with the Devil Rays should not derail him in the Hall of Fame
Joey Johnston, who writes for the Tampa Tribune, wrote about how the losses with the D-Rays should not cost him votes for the Hall of Fame as a manager. I agree with the columnist. It's not Lou's fault that this team stinks. Lou did the best he could with that team. I thought last year may have been as good as it gets with Lou managing that team. This team has showed that they have no interest in winning and that they have no interest in keeping their core players long-term. That's something Lou can't control hence why he ripped the new owner last week.
Lou should be in the Hall as a manager easily. He won a WS with the 1991 Reds in his first year. No one expected the 91 Reds to even be that good back then let alone winning a WS. Lou basically saved baseball in Seattle by teaching that young Mariners team how to win. His work in 1995 was probably the best moment of his managerial career. For one bad experience in Tampa Bay, he should not be denied at the Hall.
He is right up there in the Hall with guys like Cox, LaRussa, Torre,
