well actually...i'd rather have him in the 9th and the 10th
Jason Varitek would have caught that blooper if he was playing 2nd base.

haha, I'd pick K-Rod
I, too, would pick K-Rod just so he can blow a 3-run lead in the 9th inning and then have his offense bail him out in the 10th inning so he can act as if he himself closed out the game.
If the question is referring to who would you want to be your closer today then I gota go with Papelbon, but if its referring to overall I gota go with Hoffman, no disrespect to Mo.
For the record, Brad Lidge has been the best this year.
Yea agreed but if you were in the WS game 7 tomorrow i wouldn't want lidge, hoffman, or krod for the reasons previously mentioned, I'd take Paps but its close,

I would take KRod in WS Game 7. Did anyone see how well he did under pressure in just is rookie season?
Don't get me wrong K-Rod is a great closer but this year he's given up a few too many runs for my liking, did he get the job done yea but I'd take Paps or Mo over him... i mean we are getting really picky when we are choosing between Paps, Mo, Krod, and Nathan as they are all elite closers.

If I have a choice of facing any closer, it would be papelbon. His brilliance was exhibited last night!!
In complete honesty I'd more than likely take Mariano over Trevor as well, but I don't see how it's a huge insult to say you'd take Trevor over Mariano like as though we're comparing Mariano to Rod Beck or something.
The guy is a 1st ballot hall of famer, the all time leader in saves by a large margin, and is just now starting to show his age.
Yes, he struggled a few times in his limited chances in the playoffs, but he hasn't exactly had the same amount of opportunities to prove himself in the playoffs as Mariano has.

What???? They aren't even close. Mariano's ERA is half a run better, he has a better WHIP, he's allowed 38 fewer HRs, Hoffman has only gone over 70 IP 4 times and none since 2000 while Mariano has done it 8 times since he became closer, ... Then we have the real seperator btw the - POSTSEASON. All you have to do is watch the 1998 World Series to see what a difference there is btw these 2 guys. While Mariano didn't aloow a run and saved 3 games Hoffman blew the biggest game of the series for SD and had a 9.00 ERA. Overall in the posteason:
Mariano: .077 ERA, .075 WHIP, 8-1 record, .222 OBA, 34 saves,
Hoffman: 3.46 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, 1-2 record, 4 saves,
The reg season #s are somewhat close but Mariano leads in most key categories but when you get to postseason Mo's #s get alot BETTER while Hioffman's get alot WORSE. The 2 aren't close.
Actually he has but it's by a hair.
He wasn't the closer in that WS and his postseason record as a whole is far from great. The man has pitched 29 innings in postseason and given up 9 runs, Mariano has pitched 117 and given up 10.
Hoffman has been a top closer but Mariano has been far and away the best so to say you'd take anyone over him from this generation is ludicrous. Going forward to say you would take Rodriguez or papelbon I'd understand since Mariano is older now but Hoffman has been in the league longer so that's saying he's been better than Marinao which just isn't true.
Regardless of how few opportunities Hoffman has had in postseason he hasn't come through. In 13 postseason innings he's given up 5 runs, Mariano in 117 has given up 10. That's a pretty amazing difference.
