    Re: A Hypothetical Played Out

The cycle is statistically overrated, but if I'm an average hitter, I'd want my name in a positive selective category in the team record book. The key word is positive, so I'm not talking about striking out 5 times in a game.

Plus, if I ever hit for the cycle, and some wiseass later remarks that it was overrrated, then I can ask him, "Have you ever hit for the cycle? No? Then keep your mouth shut."

If I'm a wiseass who hit 2 home runs and a double in a game on the same day I'd say "so what?"

If I'm a wiseass fan that's spouting stuff off on the internet....well you already had me one upped just by being on a major league roster in the first place.

You can't compare hitting for the cycle to a quadruple-double in the NBA. Hitting for the cycle has been done 276 times in MLB history. A player registering a quadruple-double has only been done FOUR times in the entire history of the NBA!!!

It is a different situation if you're 50/50 on making it to third base safely. Then, it would depend on game situation (score, inning, hitters behind you, how your pitching is doing, etc.)

But I agree that in most other situations I would make a run for 3rd base.
    Perfect.

I'll say that you can't compare hitting for the cycle to even a triple double. Points, rebounds, and assists are almost mutually exclusive stats, whereas the difference between a double and a triple sometimes just depends on a hitter's base running speed.
