Re: 2007 MLB Draft Day One Discussion (ESPN 2, 2 PM EST to 6 PM EST)

From John Manuel on the BA Blog:

Daniel Moskos goes fourth to the Pirates, and the lefthander out of Clemson adds to the Pirates’ recent track record of taking pitchers in the first round. They have taken a pitcher eight of the last 10 years with their first pick. Moskos could close or start and has done both this year for the Tigers, and has done well as a starter. He’s 3-5, 2.91 with six saves and 74 strikeouts in 74 innings heading into a super-regional this weekend against Mississippi State.

In starts of late, Moskos’ velocity has sat at 90-92 mph, and he has a low-80s slider to go with a curveball and changeup. While he has good stuff, he has not dominated in his first extended stint as a college starter.

Here's a cool tidbit on Vitters, it's always neat to hear things like this and remind us why baseball is such a great game for fathers and sons.

His dad, who works as an automotive mechanic, is the only person who has ever given Josh a hitting lesson.

Its Detwiler! Nice pick for Washington. Fell in his lap in my opinion. I figured the Nats would go after pitching this year.

That is pretty awesome. Ken Griffey Jr. uses his dad to this day. I wonder if while he moves up the ranks in Chicago if he can still solely use his pops. Cool stuff.

Lots of pitchers going early. Still some intriguing arms left as well.

    Porcello, Aumont, Brackman, Main.

Let me say, the draft being televised is great. Of course ESPN is dumbing down the process, but that's good for the game as usually only the diehard baseball fan would research the draft and listen to the audio or just follow it online with a tracker... nonetheless, it's been much more enjoyable.

    LaPorta! WOW!

With Fielder being young and owning the 1B position. That is the first majorshcok of the day. Never saw that one coming.

I liked LaPorta as a steal pick last year, but I think this is high despite his pop.

Agreed. I hope one of those 4 I listed above fall to 15. Preferably not Main, but if need be...

    Whats up Newman?

I like LaPorta a lot. One of my favorite college players this year. I would have cried here if not for Votto. But far too high from the Brewers in my opinion as well.
