Round One (Players): Bernie Williams versus Carlos Beltran

Bernie Williams (1995-2006): Bernie is the all-time leader in post-seasons games played and plate appearances, although Jeter will likely pass him this year. The all-time postseason leaders in runs scored, total bases, homeruns, RBIs, times on base and is only one behind in walks. He won the 1996 ALCS MVP award and much like Jeter, will be entering his 11th straight postseason in 2006.

    versus

Carlos Beltran (2004): So, how do I put a guy with two post-season series on the best players list? Simple, Beltran freaking dominated the 2004 post-season, even if he didn’t have another one until 2006. I’ll just list the stats off that helped Houston make it to a Game 7 in 2004 against the Cards.

    12 games
    20-46
    21 runs
    3 doubles
    8 homeruns
    14 RBI
    9 BB
    .435 BA
    .536 OBP
    1.022 SLG
    6 SB

Now, extrapolate that over a 162 game season if you want a sense for his dominance. Our first 100 HR-80 SB man.

I have to vote for Bernie, even though I loved Beltran before all those groupies hopped on.

Bernie Williams gets my vote as well simply because he has been apart of this Yankee dynasty and because of all the records he holds.

Sample size folks. Williams has essentially an entire season under his belt in the playoffs with 462 AB's, and his postseason OPS rivals that of his career showing that he doesn't let up on pitchers with his ~.850 OPS. Although, had Beltran had maybe twice the AB's he had with a similar line my vote might change due to how Bernie sort of falls apart overall in his World Series appearances, but it's hard to argue with the numbers and big game moments he has been able to compile over his career in October.

Word. As much as I try not to remember that Series happened, even though I was young, those bastards Griffey and Unit keep it etched in my memory.

    Ugh.

    Tough draw for Beltran.
But no one will forget what he did, cause we'll always be reminded by his contract.
