Selig proposes new steroid policy

essentially, the new policy will be:
First offense of either steroids or amphetamines: 50 game suspension
Second offense of above: 100 game suspension
Third offense: lifetime ban

Up from the old policy, applying to steroids only, of:
1st offense - 10 days
2nd - 30 days
3rd - 60 days
4th - 1 year
5th - Selig's choice

10 days doesn't scare people. 50 days scares people more. And lifetime scares people WAY more then 30 games. Good Idea. Hope it passes (Anyone know the process?)

this actually goes pretty damned close to what i wanted in the first place. i was looking at 60 days, one year and life. but 50 games usually=60 days, and 100 games is sufficient for a 2nd penalty especially if they lose their salary!

i do think Selig wanted something stricter in the first place, but he also knew there was no way the union would ever agree to it. Its only going to take something as serious as the congress hearings to get the union to even think of agreeing to said penalties.

Yes, in our era the players union is to blame for a lot of selfish concessions going to the players. 30-40 years ago + it was the owners raking the players over the coals.

I really hope the Players Union goes with the Selig proposal to toughen up on steroids.

The most likely occurrence is that the player's union denies it, and then in 2008 (the soonest point Congress can impose its rule upon the MLB), the policy will be implemented.

I predict an eventual across the board policy for all sports. Congress asked the NFL and they all agreed at the hearing this week. I wonder if Congress will call the NHL for a hearing? Is there still an NHL? Particularly in light of the NHL having NO policy.....

There is still no blood testing. This doesn't do much. Now the minor leaguers who take OTC supplements will be missing 50 games now. But this will make Congress happy.
