ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- After opening the season on the
disabled list, Kelvim Escobar makes his first start as the
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim face the Oakland Athletics on
Sunday.
Escobar (NR), who strained his right elbow in spring training,
worked a career-high 208 1/3 innings last season and went 11-12
with a 3.93 ERA and 191 strikeouts.
Kevin Gregg filled in for Escobar in the rotation and was 1-1 in
two starts.
The Athletics counter with Joe Blanton (0-1, 2.04 ERA), who has
pitched well but hasn't been rewarded with a win yet. The
righthander has not allowed more than two runs in any of his
three starts and opponents are batting .188 against him,
including 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
Vladimir Guerrero continued his hot hitting with three hits,
including a pair of RBI doubles, to lead the Angeles to a 9-5
triumph over the A's on Saturday.
The reigning American League Most Valuable Player, Guerrero is
batting .500 (14-of-28) in his last seven games and has hit
safely in 15 of 18 games this season.
