The Los Angeles Dodgers knew Jason Schmidt had a rotator cuff injury when they signed him to a contract worth a guaranteed $47 million, the club acknowledged in a court filing this week.
I guess Ned can't ever use the excuse that Stan Conte never told him that Schmidt was damaged goods.

Ken Gurnick, of MLB.com, reports the Los Angeles Dodgers are considering free-agent SP Randy Wolf (Astros).

I approve. We can do a lot worse for a No. 3 starter. At least he doesn't allow many balls to be hit over the wall.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the Dodgers have signed Claudio Vargas "to an incentive-laden, one-year deal."
According to the newspaper, Vargas will make $400,000 in base salary and can earn an additional $1.4 million in incentives. Vargas went 3-2 with a 4.62 ERA in 37 innings for the Mets before being designated for assignment in July and finishing the season at Triple-A.
AAA is likely to be where Vargas plays again but he might have a shot at the rotation if the Dodgers don't add any starters.

Vargas used to be mentioned in the same breath as A.J. Burnett and Brad Penny in the subject of Marlins pitching prospects. Now we know he's just a guy who has good stuff, good control, but serves up home runs with the worst of them. Not a bad move to give McDizzle some competition in spring training, but something still needs to be done to replace Lowe.

Martin now says he wants to stay.
Reporting from Glendale, Ariz. -- Russell Martin, who rebuffed the Dodgers' overtures about a long-term contract last winter, said Thursday he would like to explore such a deal this winter.

"I'm always interested in a long-term deal," Martin said. "Who wouldn't be?"

On the day the Dodgers formally released Andruw Jones, owners Frank and Jamie McCourt invited Martin to a private lunch here. Martin, an All-Star in each of the last two years, then joined the McCourts on a media tour of the Dodgers' new spring home.

Martin said the lunch was informal, and his contract status did not come up. He officially filed for salary arbitration Thursday -- as did Jonathan Broxton, Andre Ethier and Jason Repko -- and General Manager Ned Colletti said the Dodgers are "concentrating on a one-year [contract] at the moment."

But Martin, who has changed agents this winter, said he hoped to discuss a long-term extension as well.

"I just want to get treated fairly," he said. "I'm not trying to steal the bank."
He remains property of the Dodgers for three more years. If he decides to leave afterwards, then hopefully Logan is still in the front office.

Jan 19 Ken Gurnick, of MLB.com, reports the Los Angeles Dodgers avoided arbitration with OF Jason Repko Monday, Jan. 19, agreeing on a one-year, $500,000 deal. Repko can make another $90,000 in incentives for plate appearances.
He's been well worth letting Shane Victorino, Jayson Werth, and Cody Ross all go.

What stood out from Jeff Kent's press conference was that only one former teammate, Jose Vizcaino, was in attendance.

Milton signed a MLC. This means Schmidt, Estes, Vargas, Weaver, and Stults all will compete for the fifth spot.

Fatty Brazoban has been released. Shawn Estes got cut from the big league camp, but will report to the minor league camp because the scrubs need a batting practice machine.

Chad Billingsley tossed a 30-pitch side session Friday and reported no problems with his strained right groin.

Manager Joe Torre announced Friday that Manny Ramirez will bat third in the Dodgers' lineup this season.

    Dodgers Chuck Tiffany's Back!

Assistant GM Logan White, the Dodgers scouting director who drafted (second round) and signed Tiffany in 2003 -- the team had taken Chad Billingsley in the first round -- signed Tiffany again this week, this time to a minor-league contract. The Tampa Bay Rays had given up on the left-hander after he had trouble coming back from rotator-cuff surgery, releasing him about three weeks ago. But Logan saw him throw and deemed him at least healthy enough to take another chance on. Tiffany has been assigned to extended spring training for now, where he will try to pitch his way onto the roster of one of the Dodgers' affiliates. You may recall he was traded to Tampa Bay on Jan .14, 2006, along with pitching prospect Edwin Jackson, for relievers Danys Baez and Lance Carter.
Remember Chuck Tiffany? Well, he's back - Inside the Dodgers
Does this mean we won the trade since the Rays now have neither Edwin Jackson nor Tiffany? Eh, eh?

The Dodgers' website reported that Kuo has been placed on the DL. Elbert is likely to be recalled from Double-A. Just in time to join Mota as Joe's rested relievers available for arson work tomorrow.
