Home runs are worthless if you don't walk a lot.

Here comes the roll of "He could've and should've been a Yankee!" articles.

Dodgers gambled big on phenom Puig based on just one BP session - NYPOST.com

Because White saw the baseball version of LeBron James a year ago this month in Mexico City. A year later, the newest sensation in the sport will be at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night as a combination of Bo Jackson, Roberto Clemente and Austin Powers, International Man of Mystery.
The Mets, in their austerity, never were players. The Yankees, counting pennies more than ever, also never made an offer. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman explained how hard it is to make judgments if a player can transition from the NL to the AL or from Triple-A to New York — and that is with reams of information. How do you pay millions and millions based on a handful of workouts?

But the Dodgers were unique. They had been sold for a franchise-record $2.1 billion in March from the miserly Frank McCourt to a group fronted by Magic Johnson and bankrolled by Guggenheim Partners. The new ownership made spending lavishly its initial strategy to win back its fan base.

Thus, White went from having the smallest budget for such maneuvers to the largest.

Sometimes you get a Puig, sometimes you get a Kaz Matsui. Yankees haven't been in take a risk mode in quite some time.

That was what they are doing though, with Hughes, Chamberlain, Kennedy, Melancon, Cox, Robertson, Horne, Marquez, Betances, Banuelos, Brackman, Nova, McAllister, Bleich, etc.

    Re: Dodgers sign Cuban Puig

Unfortunately there's not much development there. Partially because they love to blow their early picks on projects. A few of those were fringe guys anyway, like Horne, Marquez. Brackman was such a stupid pick, I hated it so much and now he's pretty much done. Keeping specs and building with them like Cash supposedly wants only works if you can identify good talent in the first place, obviously. Just venting.

Not to mention they just flat fucked Chamberlain due to Torre's bullshit.

If your first round pick isn't in the top 10, the guys you're drafting are all projects anyway, especially at the bottom of the round. Had Brackman been healthy he would've never slipped to the Yankees' pick.

    Re: Dodgers sign Cuban Puig

And he never did become healthy. I hate drafting guys with injury concerns that aren't freak in nature.

I know we're not going to find top type talents at the bottom of Round 1, but we're having trouble even developing guys that get a cup of coffee in the majors. That's a problem for filling out a roster. Brackman through Culver was such a shit show (Cole for not getting him signed, which is not a fault issue really). If Heathcott or whoever develops and such, I'll eat crow, but I'm not holding my breath. Bleich coming back strong from surgery the same.

Only losers and small market wannabes worry about draft picks. The Lakers haven't made a successful draft pick since Eddie Jones and they turned out fine, haven't they?

If every team could afford to spend like the Lakers they may not have to worry about building from within as much either.

Of course, that doesn't really apply to the Yankees.
