Astros trade for Barmes

Astros acquired INF Clint Barmes from the Rockies for RHP Felipe Paulino.
Barmes, 31, batted just .235/.305/.351 with eight homers and 50 RBI this past season, but is a solid defender and still possesses good power for a middle infielder. It hurts to give up on a young pitcher like Felipe Paulino, but the Astros apparently think Barmes can be an everyday player for them next season, whether at second base or shortstop.

Interesting move here. Barmes was most likely going to be non-tendered so why not wait and get him then? Now the Astros have traded a pitcher they didn't have to and will likely tender a contract to Barmes. Barmes will get a raise over the $3.33 million. Maybe the Astros will not tender him a contract and work out a lesser deal. Still a strange move for the Astros. Since Keppinger looks like the answer at second, Barmes will play SS. Barmes might do well with a fresh start somewhere else.
