I feel ya on that. They've almost become the Yankees, dare I say it.

But in all seriousness, if you are gonna pay a guy, THIS is the guy you want to pay.

All of these huge contacts look like THE guy you want to pay if you pay that much at the time of the signing.

I don't know about that. I mean, this is someone that is worth a lot more in all reality.

Nobody is worth thirty million a year, I don't care what FanGraphs says.

I'm sure they thought Tim Lincecum was worth his contact at the time of his signing too.

    Re: Clayton gets PAID

The truth is, when it comes time for the 2nd contract and beyond sports stars often get paid for what they've already done and not what they're actiually going to do for the life of the contract.

I mean, I guess it evens out for them because most of the budding stars were underpaid relative to performance prior to that, but that still doesn't help the team that's paying them the bukoo bucks to not be quite as good now.

(Not saying that's going to happen with Kershaw, it's just what happens often)

    Clayton gets PAID

Well, I'd argue the one thing that Kershaw has over, really any other mega contract is his age. I know pitchers are a crapshoot and this contract is a huge risk. But compared to the Guys that we look back on thinking "well, they seemed like good bets when the contract was signed," at least the contract only pays Kershaw silly amounts for his prime years instead of the back end of his prime and his downfall (see: Pujols, A-Rod, Hamilton, et al)

It got to a point when people were more than likely saying the same thing about the first million dollar contract.

    Re: Clayton gets PAID

There was some amount of overpaid sports star sentiment in that post, I admit. But my main argument is that fangraphs is saying what he's worth based on what he has done before signing this contact under the assumption nothing changes. Kershaw wouldn't be the first big star to sign a huge contract then regress. See Tim Lincecum.

    Re: Clayton gets PAID

Yeah I see what you mean, and there are more than just Lincecum that you could name, and more in other sports too.

At some point though, there is bound to be someone that is able to break out of this terrible trend and keep his production at or above the level that he signed his contract at. At least this contract is structured to allow for these years to come at the front end, before degressing to a lower amount.

    Re: Clayton gets PAID

I thought Sabathia was living up to his until last season.. I don't think anyone can be perfect in the span of their monster contract, mostly cause of injuries, chronic or freak/fluke. Kershaw could easily suffer the same fate as Mark Prior or even more recently, Matt Harvey.

Crazy even if you have unlimited pockets. Wonder what Trout will command one day.

You're mad Kershaw remained with the Dodgers. Obviously, this means you thought the Cubs had a deal in the works with Kershaw.
Well, in a sense, you could say that I am the boss.
