What about when your team needs to lose salary or trying to rebuild? It all depends on the situation.
but peavy is a pitcher you try to build around. when you have him that long, you have time to build around him.

For the record, I agree with what rockin said.
My only point of contention is the asinine notion that once the deal is done (and even if they were to go as far as to trade Adrian...which would piss me off a lot more than trading Jake would.) that it's somehow impossible for the Padres to eventually rebound once Moorad takes full control.

You can agree with rockin all you want, Padres tickets sales are way down and the Padres cannot afford Peavy and his salary hike. Being in such a small market doesn't help either. Hard to build around a pitcher that has only three guaranteed years.
His salary doesn't escalate drastically for two years.
Depending on the return I don't think it's as earth shatteringly bad as mofo's making it out to be, and (again, if the return is good) it can be beneficial to the club, but I still think it's a better idea to keep him.
Of course, I'm not in control of the financial books so I don't know how much of an impact his salary is really going to have on them over the next two years.

His salary jumps from $8 million this year to $15 million next year. I'd say that's pretty drastic.
I thought the Padres getting two lefty prospects plus two other players from the White Sox was a damn good return. Better than any offer they talked about this offseason. That's why I think Towers kicked a puppy when Peavy told he he didn't want to leave.
I wasn't sold on Poreda. Everything I read on him suggested he had control issues and that his ceiling was a "middle of the order starter who could eat innings"
Not very flattering when you're trading a Cy Young winner.

He was their #2 prospect (top pitching prospect), 22 years old and was only in AA. Plenty of time to develop and get more polish. His WHIP for his career is 1.13 which is hardly awful. A power lefty in PetCo? Along with Richard? I like it.
Being a specific team's #2 prospect is very relative. It could just mean they have a weak system.
I do like his minor league stats, but that doesn't always translate to the big leagues.

I know what you are saying, I do. I just think it was the best offer the Pads have gotten so far. Whoever wants him will have to do better than two power lefties.
Clayton Richard doesn't throw all that hard, at least not for strikes. He throws 91-92 mph for strikes, 95 only if the pitch sails very high and outside.
Richard threw hard in the playoffs last year. That's all I have seen of him.
