And I don't find 3 or 4 huge contract busts in a 2 or 3 year span to be rare.

Pierre doesn't qualify, dumbass. He didn't immediately suck after he got his new contract. He may be vastly overpaid but he put up the same stats.

Here's a very interesting fact about the deal:

Not entirely sure I understand this all, but my basic understanding is that he can scoot after 3 years if he doesn't like New York. The part I don't get is what is this buck the opt-out trend business? That makes no sense to me.

Also, the Yankees made it $161 million total, just so it would top Johan Santana's yearly average. 160 came out just barely below that.

This is actually a brilliant deal by Cashman because he will most likely get the best 3 years of the deal if he opts out for FA. It was also rumored that the Yanks had to convince the Sabathia's to come to New York and if he doesn't like the lifestyle of NYY, he can opt out. The Yanks avoid being caught in a situation like Zito or Schmidt.

You really believe he'll opt out and leave all that remaining money on the table if his arm is shot by the end of his first 3 years?

No, but it could keep him from breaking down 4 or 5 years into the contract

If it was a club option, then hell yeah it's a good deal for the team. But it's a player option, so you know he'll exercise it unless he's even better in 3 years than he is right now, and then you're stuck with him for the entirety of the contract, and injuries and regression and all.

If he exercises it, you'd have to see how the next 4 years played out to figure out if it was a good thing or a bad thing
