    This is getting crazy.

The Padres aren't going to be able to afford to keep anybody worth a shit if this crap continues and they don't implement a cap.

Baseball doesn't need a cap. The Pads can afford it if they want to just like every team in MLB. The Cubs just did it with the contracts of Soriano, Lee, Ramirez, Lilly and even DeRosa and they don't even have an owner yet. Great signing by the Cubs as they couldn't let him go. Next year they need to get serious and put together a bullpen.

The Padres don't bring in as much as other teams so to suggest they can throw money at free agents as much as other teams like the Cubs do willy nilly is wearing blinders.

You're right, the Cubs did it with all of those players....how, exactly, does that prove that the Padres can do the same?

It takes money to make money as the old phrase goes. The Padres can compete with any other club and have. These big market teams haven't been winning much lately. The Marlins, Cardinals, White Sox and Diamondbacks did it. Boston has been the only big market team to win in the past few years. And to answer your question, if the Cubs can exceed their budget without even having a real owner I don't see why The Padres can't do the same for guys like Peavy and Young when their time comes.

First of all, I do not believe I posted anywhere that it's impossible for the Padres to win without a big budget....it's more difficult, but it can be done.

The Cubs are exceeding their budget (which is a lot higher than that of the Padres to begin with because they bring in a lot more money) because they're about to sell the team and they don't care about the issues that it might cause.

Sure, the Padres can exceed their budget (provided they don't break the Debt Service Rules...which, to be honest, I have no idea how that works, I just know it has something to do with not allowing owners to spend more than their team can afford to spend, or something like that) but it's not really wise to do so in the long run.

The whole "it takes money to make money" cliche is a bit overused. While it's true, that doesn't mean spending more than you bring in is going to always make money.

If they're going to overspend for anyone, Jake would be the guy (and arguably CY as well) but my original complaint was....contracts like this that continue to go up are going to make what they have to overspend on them a helluva lot more than it originally would have been.

If they go up enough....what it'd cost to keep Jake (or CY) will over exceed that which would be reasonable for a small market team to put into one guy.

I don't care how good Jake Peavy is, it would not be wise to spend 25 mil/year on one player...at least not for the Padres.

All caps does tend to come off as "yelling" on message boards.

The only reason I've never commented on it to you is because I've noticed you use them even in general conversation even when you're obviously not trying to convey "yelling".

Yeah it does come off a little rude its alright though just take caps off. Now on Zamabrano he deserves this contract down to every penny. Hes pitched well for the Cubs and he is one of the major reason the Cubs are pursuing the playoffs. If it wasn't for Carlos I don't think the Cubbies would be anywhere near the playoffs.
