Gil Meche, say hello to Kansas

The Gil Meche sweepstakes are over, and the Kansas City Royals are the winners.

ESPN's Steve Phillips reported Thursday that the Royals and Meche have agreed to terms on a 5-year deal, pending a physical. Financial details were not immediately available.

Earlier Thuesday, it was reported that Royals and Meche were working towards a four-year, $45 million deal.

Meche, a six-year veteran, has a career record of 55-44 and a 4.65 earned-run average, all with the Seattle Mariners. He was 11-8 for the Mariners last season with a 4.48 ERA.

The Toronto Blue Jays and Chicago Cubs also were in the running for Meche.
5 years for Meche at a costequal to at least the 4 yr/45 mil (likely)... wow. I guess things do not change in Kansas despite the changes they make at the top.

Shoot the Royals in the face.

    The collective face.

This is the worst signing of the year.

    Gil Meche got 10 Million?!?!?!?!?!?!

I hope they have insurance on his fragile arm. Not to mention a shrink for the Royals due to his inconsistency.

This is why I wanted the Reds to say screw these second tier guys and gear up the front. This is ridiculous... Eric Milton looks like a bargain now.

This is getting pitiful. If youre going after a pitcher anti up the extra 6-7 mil and go for tier 1 not barely tier 2.

Not only is it a horrible deal for a horrible team, but they don't even play in Kansas.

Meche getting upwards of $11 million a season is a joke, I guess he had higher demands being he would have to play for the Royals
"They asked me if I wanted the ball in Game 6, and I said yes. I'll always say yes. That's what I did with Jack McKeon. I told him, 'Let me see how I feel tomorrow.' I went out, did a long toss, came in and said, 'I'll pitch, I want it, I want to do it.' And it ended up working out." -Josh Beckett

The Negative-Meche is getting paid more than Chris Carpenter.

The Positive-Royals got a pitcher somewhat worth a **** who is reaching his prime.

We are going to see these teams crying poorman's blues again in a couple of years! I could barf watching these average players getr this kind of salaries! Meche and Lilly had better get ready for the A-Rod treatment real soon if they don't produce!!! I mean please these really are poorman's contract of A-Rod's. Don't you all agree?

The money I can understand, because everybody is getting way more than they deserve this off-season. What I don't understand is 5 years. I just know the Royals are going to regret signing for that many years.

See, I am the opposite. He is 28 and coming into his prime so the years aren't a problem. The money is what makes me sick. $11 mil for a 4.48 ERA is absolutley gross.
