Re: The New Detroit Lions Roster

    Trades:
    Cleveland sends:
    Jordan Cameron - 1,508,350 (119,350)
    Paul Kruger - 8,200,000 (11,800,000)
    3-083 Cleveland Browns

    Detroit Sends:
    Larry Warford $714,250 - $522,750
    Glover Quin $4,550,000 - $4,200,000
    2-045 Detroit Lions
    ----------------------------------
    Detroit trades
    1.10

    Atlanta trades:
    1.18 + 2.56 + 4.118 + 7.222
The aforementioned Cameron trade left me without the means to really go after who I wanted (Clemson WR Sammy Watkins and Texas A&M WR Mike Evans), so I traded down as there were a number of players who I have graded about the same. I landed one of them in Pryor at 18.

    ------------------------------
    Detroit Trades:
    WR Ryan Broyles $1,003,227 - $557,636

    Tampa Trades:
    OLB Najee Goode

This trade was to open up some competition at WR behind Austin/Burleson and Megatron. I really like Washington with Megatron as a mentor. Broyles just could never stay healthy and had multiple knee/leg/ankle injuries which takes its toll.

    2014 Detroit Lions Draft Review

1.18 (acq ATL) Calvin Pryor, S, Louisville (HT: 5'11⅛”; WT: 207 lbs)
Big time physical force in the defensive backfield, Pryor can play both Strong and Free Safety with ease, my initial plan for him is to go SS and let him play sort of like Pittsburgh has allowed Troy Polamalu. Many of his negatives can be fixed with practice with an NFL caliber coaching staff.

2.56 (acq ATL) Travis Swanson, C, Arkansas (HT: 6'5”; WT: 312 lbs)
If there is a better way to prepair for the NFL than to play Center in the SEC I would like to know. I wanted a true center in there so as to not lose the continuity. Also he’s going to get a lesson on swagger come summer practices when he’s facing off against Nick Fairley and the first team defense.
I want to see him get into the weight room and bulk up some more, his recognition is 2nd to none in this draft and with work I hope he’s mentioned with Jeff Saturday for Centers.

3.76 Jeremy Hill, RB, LSU (HT: 6'1”; WT: 233 lbs)
If the Super Bowl showed me anything it was that you CANNOT abandon the running game. Hill has one of the best size/speed combinations in the draft. He can be a valuable receiver out of the backfield, he also does not have a lot of wear on his tires. Set a new SEC record for Yards Per Rush (6.9) in 12 games he racked up 1401 yards in 2012. He’s gotta learn how to run behind his 233 lb frame.

3.83 (acq Cle) Dontae Johnson, DB, NC State (HT: 6'2”; WT: 200 lbs)
Versatility is the name of the game, and during his time at NC State, Johnson has played CB, Safety, Nickle, and special teams. I want him to come in and provide some depth at the back part of the defense. Immedately he’s probably a nickel back playing 3rd wr or tight ends. He has the height, the question is the speed. Might also have to play as a gunner on special teams to help him stick immediately.

4.107 Justin Ellis, DT, Louisiana Tech (HT: 6'1”; WT: 334 lbs)
With Suh gone to Tampa I needed someone to hold down the fort in the middle. At 334 lbs Ellis will eat up blockers, he’s not a pass rusher but with the rest of Detroit’s D-Line, I didn’t feel like I needed someone to get after the qb, I needed someone to stuff blockers at the line.

4.118(acq Atl) La’Damian Washington, WR, Missouri (HT: 6'4”; WT: 195 lbs)
I love guys who are named team offensive captain and AREN’T Quarterbacks. It speaks to the type of worker Washington is. He needs to come in and work on his route running but I think he will be a deep threat that it could help open up things for Megatron. He needs to work on catching with his hands so his first priority when we aren’t on the field… play basketball or baseball 24x7. I reached on Washington because I figured not having a 5th might endanger me to miss out completely on wide receivers in this draft.

6.173 Brett Smith, QB, Wyoming (HT: 6'1”; WT: 205 lbs)
I won't lie, I hoped Georgia QB Aaron Murray would be here. I thought Murray would have been more of a known quantity as a backup, but he went a few picks before I drafted. Smith was constantly running for his life behind a bad offensive line mucks up his tape. I love watching him out of shotgun at Wyoming. I need him to be a clipboard holder backup. With time and work I see him being the next guy that you hear about teams trading a decent/good pick for to answer their short term problems at QB.

7.204 Jonathan Dowling, FS, Western Kentucky (HT: 6'3”; WT: 190 lbs)
When you get to the 7th round and you see a guy who’s talent far exceeds the round, you have to take him. Rated as one of the top safeties in Fla during his recruiting class is quite the testament to the talent. Hopefully having to spend two years at Western Kentucky and watching 203 other guys drafted gets his head right and gets him to grow up. If he reaches his potential, Dowling/ Pryor could be the starting safety duo for Detroit for the next decade.

7.212(acq Atl) Josh Mauro, DE/DT, Stanford (HT: 6'6”; WT: 271 lbs)
One thing just absolutely jumped out at me watching Mauro’s tape, him getting off the ball. He is CONSISTANTLY the first guy out of his stance. He’s only started a handful of games at Stanford but he is a hard worker and goes toward what I’m trying to change the motto of the defense.

UDFA Kadeem Edwards, OG, Tennessee State (HT: 6'4"; WT: 313 lbs)
Somewhat surprised Edwards made it out of the draft without being drafted. He comes from a smaller school which hurt his stock. I didn't want to risk going after him for practice squad and felt with my line as it is I could groom him as an OG, some scouts say he could possibly move to center but the plan would be for him to be ready to take over at guard.
