Miami Dolphins Draft Report - Totally not copying the Bears.
1.21 - Bradley Roby, CB, Ohio State - After losing Brent Grimes to the Rams, Corner shifted to a bigger priority. Even landing Thurmond who will be a fine #2 we really needed someone opposite and Roby fit the billing. Roby is physical corner with fluid hips who can shadow WR with ease. While he was inconsistent at Ohio State that was mainly due to the scheme and doesn't reflect Roby who has the most upside to any corner in this draft.
2.54 - Morgan Moses, OT, Virginia - With CB taken care of we were hoping Van Noy could fall a bit further but alas it didn't happen. While both tackles were filled via trades there is no depth. With Moses were getting a potential franchise LT after Peters is gone or a RT if Beatty is unable to be ready for the season. Moses strength is his size. Standing 6'6 320 he moves very well able to stick with pass rushers with ease. He needs work in run blocking but he has everything you look for in a quality linemen.
3.71 - Christian Jones, LB, Florida State - We like Jones but without a position in the NFL it was a reach. His strong suit is his versatility. Able to line up as a DE, play MLB, or both Strong/Weak side. Getting Lance Briggs made this pick sting a bit less as it will give him time to develop to take over that position in the future. Jones is 6'3 240 athletic LB with the physical skill set to go out and cover and his size give him quite an advantage as a pass rusher. Were hoping Jones can become a special playmaker for the Miami Dolphins
3.72 - Bishop Sankey, RB, Washington - We covered some big needs at this point in the draft but we were rather thin at RB after trading Miller for versatile super star Rhett Ellison and back up MLB Audie Cole, cutting other not very useful RB but we were able to get Mojo who is still an asset and wont be a full time RB. With Sankey were getting a very good all-around RB. Displays great vision, good interior runner, fantastic pass blocker. He is solid and the most consistent RB in this draft.
4.99 - Zach Mettenberger, QB, LSU - We had a few targets leading up to round 4. We weren't thinking QB but with no clear back up in Miami and Tannehill hasn't exactly showed he is the franchise it was hard to pass on Mettenberger. While Mettenberger doesn't have a lot of mobility he has gotten better with each year and took a bigger role as a leader something that was a concern at his career at LSU. Cam Cameron really improved MEttenberger to be one of the better QB in the nation before his knee injury. Getting the Berg in round 4 is terrific. No pressure for him to start, he can adjust to the NFL and rehab his injury to back up Tannehill in the near future.
4.B - George Uko, DT, USC - After losing Paul Soliai, Randy Starks, and trading Jared Odrick we needed some help at DT. While we like Cam Thomas and Vance Walker they are obviously downgrades to what we had and the band-aids of Al Woods and Antonio Johnson wasn't going to get it done. George Uko is a bit under the radar but its clear his first step and ability to jump the snap count has teams DROOLING. He can be a disruptive force because of this and find pressure. Uko is able to play any where on the line. His versatility is unmatched on this Dolphins DL.
5.159 - Isaiah Crowell, RB, Alabama State - With running backs now going off the board we had limited options on who we wanted. The former Georgia product has 1st round talent but with an injury history with a rap sheet with push him back quite a ways. Luckily he wont be a featured RB not with Mojo and Sankey on the team. He is a dynamic athlete, that can catch and block. Bit of a complete package who can be a force in the NFL if he keeps his head out of trouble.
5.B - Spencer Long, OG, Nebraska - We had other targets at guard but those players never lasted long enough. We did try trading up for someone but it didn't work out. We weren't really impressed with what was out there so we were willing to wait it out for Long considering we re-signed jack of all trades Nate Garner and traded for Rishaw Johnson. Spencer tore his knee in October but before that was solid. He is a massive guard who knows how to use it to an advantage. Not only is he a force in the running game but he is a leader on and off the field something this Dolphins team lacked which is why Incognito, Martin, and Pouncey are no longer on the team. If Long show he is able to play in 2014 he will have a chance at starting at RG.
5.D - Blake Annen, TE, Cincinnati - It was about time we addressed getting a weapon on the outside for Tannehill. With so many WR getting taken there wasn't one worth it and looking at TE were missing something dynamic. Something Michael Egnew was suppose to be but isn't. Enter Annen, Blake was absolutely misused at Cincy. He is a 6'4 240 athletic beast who is the total package but was primarily used as a blocking TE instead of a mismatch for opposing defenses. Annen will end up better pro than college player for sure.
7.211 - Ryan Carrethers, NT, Arkansas State - We traded down because we had an opportunity to grab a solid pass rushing DT in Karl Klug who was moved to DE in Tennessee. Grabbing Klug meant our band-aid DT we signed can be ripped off because we were able to land one of the better NT in the draft. Has ideal size at 6'1 335, he is very active on defense racking up tackles smothering opposing teams RB being an immovable object on the defense. However he will struggle against lengthy linemen but not really a concern for a guy built like a tank who can move anything in his path.
