    Tigers Tigers looking at Penny

According to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com, the Tigers are still pursuing free agent right-hander Brad Penny.
The Tigers have already had a pretty successful offseason, but are still looking for alternatives to round out their starting rotation. Penny would be a pretty nice buy-low. The 32-year-old right-hander posted a 3.23 ERA and 35/9 K/BB ratio over his first nine starts with the Cardinals last season before going down with a lat injury in May. If healthy, he would be an upgrade to Armando Galarraga for the final spot in the rotation.
The Tigers definitely need another starter so Penny on a one year deal fits perfectly. His lat muscle should be perfectly healed by now and his arm well rested. Funny to think that the last time we saw Penny in uniform, he was rounding the bases after crushing a HR.

Not just any HR. A grand slam off Joel Pineiro. Also, the reason Penny is always considered a nice buy-low candidate is because he lands on the DL every year.

Fair replacement for Bonderman, but equally as injury prone if not more.

    Re: Tigers looking at Penny

The Tigers are nearing a one-year, $3 million deal with Brad Penny.
Penny can also earn another couple million through performance-based incentives. It might seem like a big commitment for a pitcher who drew very little interest this winter, but the big right-hander posted a strong 3.23 ERA and 35/9 K/BB ratio in nine starts with the Cardinals last season before a back injury put him on the disabled list for good. If Penny can stay healthy, he is a highly effective starter. He should be 100 percent this spring.
Like the article said, Penny should be fine for '11. He had a good 2009 throwing 173 innings and had a fluke injury in '10 so I will say he's a lot more reliable than Bonderman, not to mention a lot better.

According to MLB.com's Jason Beck, the Tigers have agreed to terms with Brad Penny on a one-year, $3 million contract.
The deal also includes another $3 million in performance-based incentives. It should prove to be a nice move for the Tigers, as long as Penny can stay healthy for more than a handful of starts. He registered a quality 3.23 ERA and 35/9 K/BB ratio over nine outings in 2010 for St. Louis and he still owns a strong 4.11 career ERA and 1.34 career WHIP. The 32-year-old righty will be relevant in most mixed leagues this season.
I like the move for the Tigers. They needed another starter and Penny should be well rested. Only concern is him returning to the AL. His last stint didn't go so well.
