AL road swing results in an audition for Shealy

As first baseman Ryan Shealy rose steadily through the Colorado farm system, his path to the Rockies seemed to be blocked by Todd Helton.

They will become teammates Tuesday in Cleveland when Shealy puts on a Rockies uniform for the first time. He was recalled after the Rockies' game Sunday, and utility infielder Tim Olson was optioned to Class AAA Colorado Springs.

The Rockies' next six games will be at Cleveland and Baltimore, American League cities where the designated hitter is used. Seeking to add more firepower to their lineup, the Rockies decided it was time to see Shealy, 25, who was hitting .319 for the Sky Sox with a team-most 11 home runs and 37 RBI in 57 games.

"The reports (on Shealy) have been good," manager Clint Hurdle said. "He works hard. He continues to try and improve his defense. He's impressive at the plate. He hits the ball to all fields and hits it with some power. He's a good hitter on top of that, so we'd like to take a look at him."

Unlike third baseman Garrett Atkins and right fielder Brad Hawpe, who began their professional careers at first base, Shealy, who is 6-foot-5, 240 pounds, is bigger and less mobile, making a position change less likely.


He will be starting at 1B within the next 2 years most likely so it's nice to get a look at him in the ML. I wouldn't be surprised if he plays 1B a few times too and lets Helton rest some and DH.
