According to the Denver Post, Franklin Morales smoothed out his pitching mechanics during the offseason and "removed the pause in his motion."
The newspaper notes that "his fastball has consistently been clocked at 92-94 mph and has touched 95 mph at times." Morales, whose average fastball was 90.9 mph last season compared to 92.5 mph as a rookie, explained that undisclosed back problems limited him.
Morales has to stay healthy enough to be able to even throw a pitch again for Colorado. Morales did a good job his rookie year coming up in the middle of an amazing playoff push but looked awful last year. Rockies need him healthy if they want to finish third again.

The Rockies acquired third baseman Josh Fields from the Pirates for a player to be named later or cash, tweets the team. Fields had been reassigned to the Pirates' minor league camp three days ago.

Fields, 28, missed most of the 2010 season due to hip surgery, though he had 104 interesting plate appearances before being non-tendered. Aside from third base, he's dabbled at first and left field.

Fields was drafted 18th overall by the White Sox in 2004 and was once considered a top prospect. He crushed 23 home runs in 418 plate appearances with the Sox in '07, nine of which came in August of that year.
Fields has also been playing LF adding some versatility. He had a terrible spring but maybe he can get back on track for the Rox.
