Gardner on lookout for brighter days
Pitcher coming off disabled list, returning to rotation this week
    By Kevin T. Czerwinski / MLB.com

CHATTANOOGA -- The storm clouds were rolling in fast Saturday afternoon over BellSouth Park, thunderstorms barreling up from the southwest. As the skies darkened, Richie Gardner didn't seem to notice.

The former University of Arizona standout was in the home bullpen, firing away for Chattanooga pitching coach Bill Moloney, working out the final kinks before his scheduled return from the disabled list on Monday. Gardner, one year removed from a strong rookie season in pro ball, has been sidelined for the past week with what he called a strain in his right biceps.

And as he was putting the finishing touches on his mid-afternoon side session, it didn't take a meteorologist to see that the skies would be opening up very soon. But as one storm over southeastern Tennessee was about to begin, Gardner was hopeful that a storm of another of sort was coming to an end.

    Tidbits from ondeckbaseball.com

1B Joey Votto was a perfect 2-for-2 with a solo homer (6) and CF Chris Dickerson went 2-for-4 with a solo shot (7) for the Reds. Votto has left the yard in 3 out of the last 4 games. His average has climbed to .271 and he leads Sarasota with 27 RBIs. Dickerson leads the Reds with 25 runs scored and 21 walks. He's hitting .272 overall. Votto and Dickerson are two of the Reds' best prospects.

RHP Homer Bailey was in line for the "W" on Wednesday, but the Dayton (CIN) bullpen would give up 6 runs in the bottom of the 8th inning to lose the game to Clinton (TEX), 6-4. Bailey would pitch around 3 hits and 4 walks in 5 scoreless innings, K'ing 5. The flame-throwing Texan has not allowed an earned run in his last 4 outings, a stretch of 15 innings. His ERA has fallen to 2.22 and he's fanned 35 batters in 24.1 innings. Bailey continues to be used in a "piggy-back" format, alternating between starting and relieving. I hope the Reds eventually let him start full-time

Here is also a side note from Dayton Daily News

Dragons notes: Homer Bailey would have pitched the back end of Sunday's game, except he showed up Saturday with tightness in his right shoulder.

"You don't want to say this, but he's a special (No. 1 draft pick) case," Powell said. "If he doesn't feel 100 percent, we're going to look into it.

"(Today) he'll go see Dr. (Tim) Kremchek in Cincinnati. I think he'll be OK and be able to pitch on Saturday."

James Morrison filled in for Bailey and combined with starter Brad Morenko on a five-hitter with no walks.

Could it be something with the way the team works starters during their 4 "off days" and just overworking them? Last night on the radio they said Wilson is one of the hardest workers to stay in shape, could he just be overworking himself now? Because like Griffey he isnt exactly the young kid anymore.

Could be. Inetersting thought no doubt. I really hope that management figures this out though. We need some sort of closure on this. Where is the velocity? CRF, try and submit a question to Hal on this. We need some answers on Wilson's problems and the teams lack of velocity as a whole.

Bailey, who had to get his shoulder checked out, is just fine. That's great to hear obviously.

    • Dragons tales: As expected Homer Bailey's tight right shoulder passed inspection by Reds Dr. Tim Kremchek Monday and was diagnosed as just some tendinitis. He is expected to make his next start, Saturday, after being held out of Sunday's game.

Very good news on Bailey. I was definitely concerned that this could slow down his upcoming. So great news for the organization today!
