CF Chris Denorfia was 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs for the Lookouts in the win. Denorfia has scored a run or knocked in a run in 6 straight games. He's collected 6 hits in the last 2 games to jump his average to .343, which ranks 9th in the SL.

Denorfia has really been something. I am not sure what to think about this guy. But he has been impressive all year.

I agree redsrbetter. You would have to think a call to Louisville would have to happen soon. But they have a few OF as well. Its hard to say what will happen to him.

Kelly and Kelly key Bats in 2-1 win
Steve starts well, Kenny ends well

The Norfolk Tides came to town with the best record in the International League. They left having lost three of four to the previously scuffling Louisville Bats.

The Bats eked out a 2-1 victory in 10 innings last night to capture their first series since late April. They also returned to the .500 mark after 34 games.

"Hopefully, this will get things going a little bit," manager Rick Sweet said. "That's maybe the best ballclub in the league we just beat three out of four. It wasn't easy, but you wouldn't expect it to be easy."

Two killer Kellys and a twin killing that wasn't resulted in this close call going the Bats' way.

Kenny Kelly hit a bases-loaded, opposite-field single in the 10th inning for the winning run. In the process he extended his hitting streak to 12 games, tying the longest streak by a Bats player this season.

"He's a great athlete with all the tools," Sweet said. "But I don't know if he's ever put the whole game together like he is right now."

Steve Kelly, no relation, kept the Bats close for six innings. Nothing new there. The 25-year-old right-hander turned in his sixth straight outing that lasted exactly six innings. In all but one of his seven starts this season, Kelly has allowed one earned run or fewer.

His only blemish last night occurred when the game's second batter, Chris Basak, clobbered a 1-0 pitch out to left-center for a home run. It was Basak's first homer of the year.

Louisville might have lost 1-0 if not for one mistake in the seventh.

After a leadoff single by Stephen Smitherman, A.J. Zapp hit a gift-wrapped double-play grounder to Basak at second. But Basak bobbled the ball before he could throw to second and had to settle for the out at first. With two out, Pedro Swann slapped 2-0 change-up up the middle to tie the score.

"We've got a lot of nickel-and-dime guys on this team," he said. "We hit a lot of singles, steal some bases and bunt guys over. We try to do little things."

Swann led off the 10th with a single off Scott Strickland (0-2). Aaron Holbert couldn't bunt him over but managed to swat a single that moved him to third. Strickland then walked Alex Pelaez to load the bases, and Kelly fought off a pitch in on his hands into right field.

Brian Rose, who was called up yesterday from a rehab assignment in Class A, tossed two scoreless innings in relief of Steve Kelly. Brian Shackelford (1-3) pitched the final two innings.

The Bats turned three double plays, including a spectacular pivot-and-throw by Holbert as Ron Calloway crashed into him at second. The Tides scored only nine runs in the four-game series.

"As a team, we really wanted to win this series because we had kind of let a lot of games slip away from us this year," Swann said. "It was definitely good to come back and score late tonight for the win, because we've also had some trouble scoring runs."

The Bats begin a four-game home series against Richmond tonight at 7:15. Tom Shearn (1-2, 2.18 ERA) will make his third start of the season against Braves left-hander Sam McConnell (0-4, 5.15).
