The Reds might be able to settle on Monday's starting pitcher today.
Ramon Ortiz, who was scratched from his scheduled start Wednesday in St. Louis because of lingering soreness from the groin strain he suffered in spring training, is expected to throw a bullpen session before today's game against the Astros.
The right-hander threw in the outfield Friday.
"It feels better," said Ortiz, who last pitched April 8. "We'll see what happens and how I'm feeling after I throw (today)."
If Ortiz cannot pitch Monday, Matt Belisle probably will fill in and make his second career start. Belisle pitched five innings against the Cardinals on Wednesday and allowed one run on four hits.
Brandon Claussen, who threw a 70-pitch simulated game earlier this week, remains penciled in to start against the Cubs on Tuesday. The left-hander was available to pitch out of the bullpen Friday and will be again today.
"That's what we got him ready for," Reds manager Dave Miley said.
Because of their off day Thursday, the Reds do have some flexibility. Ortiz could pitch Wednesday - the day Paul Wilson is next scheduled to pitch - or he could be pushed back to April 23 in Florida.
