Meche and Armas Jr. on radar.

    REDS NOTES

Mariners' Meche a pitcher Reds may pursue
    By Hal McCoy

    Dayton Daily News

DALLAS | When the Cincinnati Reds talk to agents for free agents and tell them what they are able to offer, the conversation is short.

Pitching, of course, is the priority, and a couple of names whispered in the lobby of the Wyndham Anatole hotel during these winter meetings involving the Reds are Tony Armas Jr. and Gil Meche.

Armas was 7-7 with a 4.97 ERA in 19 starts with the Washington Nationals, but was injured at the end of the season, making the Reds wary of damaged goods.

"We have a number of scenarios where we look at a player's medical charts first," said General Manager Dan O'Brien.

Meche is not a free agent, but there are reports that his Seattle team may not tender him a contract by today's deadline, making him a free agent, and a pitcher the Reds might pursue. He was 10-8 with a 5.09 ERA in 26 starts for the last-place Mariners.

    I would pass on both.

    We need a #1, or even a #2. Both are #3-5 pitchers.

that's pretty generous for two guys with 5 ERA's. That's a #5 my friend, no two ways about it.

I wouldn't like either one of these guys either.

No, you are so wrong. Thats a #1 for the Reds. If I do recall our 'big FA pitcher' ... Mr. Milton = 6.47 ERA

That's fine and dandy, but we DO have Harang and Claussen.

The Reds really need more guys with crappy performance records and serious injury histories.

Hey, when you know the type to target, why change?

Seriously, I wouldn't mind taking a chance on Armas (low base, incentive deal) but the Reds would sign him and proclaim him to be the end to our problems. But more injury trouble for him makes him all that much more scary.

I think Meche could use a change of scenery. Even after his injuries his stuff is still electric, but he has control problems at times. I think he'd be good with us now that Price is gone and he's done messing with his delievery. Meche + 2 prospects (not named Clement) for Griff? Come on?

I am still bitter over how much Clement's stock shot up the last month or two before the draft. I had grand illusions of the Reds scoring a legit catching prospect. How has he been progressing with the M's?

Why cant we be proactive and find someone that improves upon whats already here? Armas cant improve the team if hes always hurt.
Meche well just yuck anything for him is too much. Him part of a deal? Better be one heck of a package we are getting.

The Reds will only go after Meche if he's non-tendered.

He posted over a .900 OPS in the minors this year. After he started to tear it up in the AFL a scout said that he is already a major league caliber hitter. No reason to rush him up now that we have Johijma though, but I wouldn't be suprised if he is a late season call up. Still needs to work on his defense behind the plate though.
