Not even Aurilia likely to be traded

Not even Aurilia likely to be traded

    By John Fay
    Enquirer staff writer

SAN DIEGO - Less than 20 hours from the trading deadline, it was beginning to look as if the Reds' dealings were done a week ago when they traded third baseman Joe Randa.

"If I had to handicap it, I'd say we're probably not going to do anymore," Reds general manager Dan O'Brien said Saturday afternoon.

That means infielder Rich Aurilia, the one Red who all logic says could be traded, won't be moved by today's 4 p.m. non-waiver deadline.

Aurilia, a 10-year veteran who signed as a free agent, is unhappy again.

Ryan Freel's return from the disabled list coupled with Edwin Encarnacion's promotion has pushed Aurilia into a utility role.

"That's what I've been told," Aurilia said.

Aurilia was the Reds' everyday second baseman while Freel was on the DL.

"I thought with the way I played, I earned the right to be in the lineup every day," Aurilia said.

Aurilia voiced his displeasure to manager Jerry Narron and O'Brien.

"There are five guys every night who are unhappy they're not in the lineup," Narron said. "You can only play eight guys at a time."

i've never seen a team that has had this much trouble with playing time. It's as if all the other teams only have 8 position players. I like what narron said, because it's time for people like Aurilia to understand that every team has backup/utility guys, and that that's what he is.

O'Brien should be fired immediately if nothing happens by 4 PM.

I'm still not totally convinced nothing will happen though.

What can O'Brien do if theres no interest for Aurilia? I think Aurilia sealed his fate to be stuck in cincy for the rest of the year when he cried about not getting any playing time and wanting to be traded. GMs and Managers read the daily sports pages like the rest of us and I figure most said "I dont want him on my team".

"Oh, don't mind me, I'm rebuilding now" then you win at least 80 games
