Can Kearns be the hero after being the fans goat early this season?

  2. #32
Base hit to center for Kearns! two runs score! The hot hitting continues.

Casey destroys barett at the plate and griffey makes it to third.

7-5 reds, and another intentional walk, this one to Dunn. Aurilia back up.
    Reds MVP Race

    6: Arroyo, Harang
    5: Kearns
    4: Phillips
    3: Dunn, Felo, Freel, Milton
    2: Claussen, EdE, Griffey, Valentin
1: Aurilia, Hatteberg, Lizard, Larue, Shackelford

and now aurilia with a base hit! two more runs come in and Dunn moves to 3rd. Pena back up as the reds bat around.

The cubs pen is falling apart, and Dusty has to be feeling a little dumb about those intentional walks. So far they've resulted in 4 runs.

    9-5 reds
    Reds MVP Race

    6: Arroyo, Harang
    5: Kearns
    4: Phillips
    3: Dunn, Felo, Freel, Milton
    2: Claussen, EdE, Griffey, Valentin
1: Aurilia, Hatteberg, Lizard, Larue, Shackelford

This really feels like vintage Kearns. Hopefully that's the case more so than bad Cubs pitching.

Kearns! I know he can keep doing this. I just know it! Pena continues to struggle.

Notice Dunn was Int. BB there? They fear him. When he doesn't get Int. BB, he often doesn't get a lot to hit.

Tough pick on MVP. I want to say Valentin, since he had two homers and scored the winning run. I also want to say Kearns, since he drove in the winning runs in his first game back. I could also easily pick the Reds bullpen, since they were great. I'm gonna give MVP to Valentin. It's not often we have a catcher play this well, and if he keeps it up, LaRue is out of a job. He certainly makes contact more than LaRue, and he's got a better eye as well. LaRue's a little better defensively, but Valentin still has a good arm.

unbelievable. how can they load them up with no outs and not get anything time after time. It's all up to aurilia. awsome.
Oh yeah remember the mantra of the Dunn lovers. A strike out is just like any other out

Oh yeah, remember the mantra of the Dunn haters. It doesn't matter how productive he is because he strikes out a lot, has a low average, and doesn't hit sac flies.

    It goes both ways, buddy.

What a great game once again! kearns came in and tore it up, he really did prove that he is ready to go now. But he has to be consistent. I just want him to have at least one hit tomorrow as well. Good game by these Reds as they are finding wins lately. valentin continues to mash right now, you have to keep him in.

    MVP: Kearns (nice comeback!)

Valentin has had a better eye this year, but LaRue has had much better numbers overall over his career:

    71 BB/837 AB- Valentin
    Career .293 OBP, .672 OPS

    150 BB/1882 AB- LaRue
    Career .322 OBP, .738 OPS

It's just like any other out. That's why the Reds still have one of the best offenses in baseball despite their high number of strikeouts.

And not coincidentally, none of those three things matter when it comes to scoring runs.

Three of the top five teams in Runs Scored are in the top ten in strikeouts. Strikeouts are just another Out, as they haven't prevented those teams from being the best in baseball in Runs Scored. And imagine that, the majority of the top five teams in Runs Scored are in the upper half of the league in strikeouts.

Valentin is definitely playing above his ceiling, but he could still be a very productive catcher in the future.
